The weathering Process
The age old silvery grey weathered look of an oak gate for some is the ideal look for their property, and this weathered look is one of our most discussed issues when clients are looking to commission a gate. The weathered look is not something that we can supply, it is best achieved through the gate being ordered with no finish applied to it. Over time the tanning in your new oak gate will be washed out and when the gate is viewed it will be seen that the tanning will stain items such as motor covers or other finishes within the immediate area of the gateway. Over time this staining will weather away.
The time factor for a new oak gate without any finish to weather down to silvery grey is said be around three to four years depending upon the position of the gates and the level of exposure to the elements.
It must be pointed out that before the silvery grey colour is seen the gates are more than likely to go very black and messy looking, this is a natural part of the process but can be minimised by periodically giving the gates a light pressure wash.
