Answers to Your Gate Questions

Why choose Oak Leaf Gates to craft a bespoke oak gate for your property?

By choosing Oak Leaf Gates, you’re guaranteed to receive exceptional craftsmanship, bespoke design, and a superior service experience. From initial design to final installation, we follow a meticulous process to achieve the finest craftsmanship at every stage.

How much for a wooden gate?

A single pedestrian wooden gate typically starts at around £700+, whereas larger driveway gates range from anywhere between £1,800 and £4,000+. However, oak is generally more expensive than other woods due to its density, strength and subsequent demand.

Our oak gates are handcrafted to order, so prices vary depending on the size and design. For an accurate quote, get in touch with your measurements and requirements.

Do you need to treat oak gate posts?

Oak is naturally durable and incredibly resistant, so it doesn’t require treatment in the same way softwoods do. However, applying a breathable protective oil can help reduce weathering, especially in more exposed locations.

At Oak Leaf Gates, our expert installation services provide the ideal drainage conditions, helping your gate posts maintain maximum longevity.

How to clean an oak gate?

When cleaning your oak gate, we recommend using a soft brush and a mild detergent to remove dirt or algae. For best results, choose a warm summer day (if possible).

Avoid pressure washers, as they can damage the surface. For deeper cleaning or restoration, apply specialist wood cleaners and lightly sand before finishing the job with a suitable oil.

If you need assistance with cleaning your oak gate, our expert maintenance services ensure it’s cleaned to the highest standards while preserving its condition.

Are wooden gates better than metal gates?

Wooden gates offer a traditional, natural look and are easier to achieve handcrafted bespoke designs. On the other hand, metal gates may suit urban settings and often require less maintenance. Due to the quality of oak timber, there is little difference in durability, so it ultimately comes down to style and preference.

The cost also varies due to the quality of material and craftsmanship. Generally, metal gates tend to be more expensive, but a high-quality oak gate will cost more than a cheaper metal, like mild steel.

How do I stop a wooden gate from warping?

Firstly, you can minimise warping with your material selection and joinery standards. All our gates are made from the finest oak to provide stability and finished with the highest quality oil to maintain durability.

Secondly, to prevent movement over time, we install our gates correctly, ensuring we avoid trapping moisture around the base or fixing points. Lastly, maintenance every year or two will help your gates stay in tip-top condition.

What is the best privacy gate design?

Large boarded gates offer the most privacy by eliminating a view from either side. From our premium Oak Leaf Gates selection, we recommend the Kinnersley, Lutyens and Monnington designs. To maximise privacy even further, we can customise all our gate designs to suit your specific requirements.

How to install a wooden gate

Installing a wooden gate involves a few important steps to guarantee it works well and lasts a long time. First, measure the opening accurately. Then dig post holes to the correct depth, usually about 600mm for standard gates, and set the posts level in concrete. Once the concrete has set, hang the gate using quality hinges, making sure it fits evenly and opens smoothly. Finally, fit secure latches or locks and test the gate’s movement.

While some experienced DIY enthusiasts can manage this, professional installation is recommended, especially for heavier hardwood gates like oak. At Oak Leaf Gates, we provide expert installation tailored to your property so your oak gate fits perfectly and performs reliably.

How long do wooden gates last?

The lifespan of a wooden gate depends on the timber, design, weather exposure and maintenance. Softwood gates usually last around 7 to 10 years, while hardwoods such as oak can last 30 years or more if cared for properly. Good installation, effective drainage, breathable finishes and regular cleaning all help extend a gate’s life.

At Oak Leaf Gates, we use air-dried oak for all our gates, a timber known for its natural durability and resistance to decay. When fitted and maintained correctly, our handcrafted oak gates provide many decades of service.

What are the different types of garden gates?

Garden gates come in various styles to suit different needs. Common types include:

  • Pedestrian gates for walkways and smaller entrances

  • Boarded gates offering more privacy and shelter from wind

  • Picket or slatted gates which offer a lighter, open look

  • Decorative gates used to frame paths or garden entrances

At Oak Leaf Gates, we offer a wide range of handcrafted oak gates from classic to modern designs. Whatever your preference for privacy or style, we can create a gate that complements your garden perfectly.
